Where we're at
The children sleep in bunk beds lining the corridors. There is no space to play, no garden, only one bathroom and a very small kitchen in which to cook for 36 children. The older children do not have a private space in which to do their homework. The Department of Social Services will not register the home until various health and safety requirements are satisfied. Given the existing set-up, these requirements cannot be met and Bathandwa cannot benefit from the various government grants available to registered homes.

Clearly, a new home is required - one that can cater to the growing needs of the children at Bathandwa, and give them hope of developing into well-adjusted adults, capable of making a positive contribution to society, rather than to the massive social crisis facing South Africa.

The Friends of Bathandwa Trust recently made a major stride in its efforts to build a new home by officially acquiring land in Khayelitsha. It is on this piece of land that the proposed new home will be built.

Location : Khayelitsha
Erf number: 20541
Size: 1700m²

The land was bought by the Friends of Bathandwa Trust using funds that were raised at a JDI fundraising ball held in August 2006.

The Trust now needs to raise funds to build the new home, as well as identify a willing building contractor.

NEXT STEPS
  1. Identify a willing building contractor to build the home
  2. Raise funds for the building of the new home via various fundraising initiatives and corporate donations
